IMG for Navy/AF/ANG Flight Surgery

Thu, 03/18/2010 - 01:13
Hey all, I just wanted to throw this out there. I am 26yo kid from Michigan, finishing up my M2 year at SGU in Grenada and will be going to the states to finish up my last two years and graduate in 2012. I am a decent student and shouldn't have too much difficulty passing the boards.
I have always loved aviation and medicine and have decided I'd love to become a flight surgeon before I figure out exactly what specialty I would want to go into, thinking about PMR, Anes, and GS, but who really knows. I am an M2.
I feel like I have read just about every post there is about FS and the military on here but I wanted to get some more current feedback on how difficult it would be to finish up a civilian Internship and join the active military as a FS. Preferably a Fighter or attack squadron that is on either coast or close to home in the Mid West? I am thinking Navy for this, I wouldn't mind deployment. And is there more flight time? As a civilian with no prior military experience, and an IMG, would I get a less than favorable flight surgeon position?
If so the other option I thought about was the ANG. Do a residency straight through and apply that way.
I just thought I could get some opinions from some Flight surgeons, or people who know the system First Hand.
Thanks in advance

Question for Military Recruiters and anybody w/ info

Wed, 03/17/2010 - 17:30
Hello,
I am a 4th yr DO med student who didnt match into general surgery categorical position on monday. Since then i have been calling trying to scramble into a prelim/transition spot but with no success. I am gradually coming to d realization that i will never find a spot. So i am left with a decision to do something else, IM, family med. Well before i succumb to that, i figure i will give one last try.
This is to any military recruiter or anyone with any knowledge of it out there. I will be willing to consider a military spot for prelim surgery if available. My goal is to do surgery, i am open to spending an extra yr for prelim and reapply next yr but all i ask for is a chance. If anyone have any idea abt this process, pls do share. I'll really appreciate it.

My stats:
graduate in may
USMLE1 216
USMLE2 210
COMLEX 1589
COMLEX2 450
COMLEX 2 PE pending

All taken once.
Thanks in advance

Army - Starting psych at PGY-2?

Wed, 03/17/2010 - 02:55
Is this possible after a year of Internal Medicine to start a psych res at the 2nd year level? Would that count towards your 48 months of requirements. According to the ACGME document it sounds like IM, FM, or peds year could count for PGY-1 and that year towards the 48 months. Is this program-specific?
Would you be behind because you missed all those PGY-1 inpatient months?

E.g. decide one does not like IM that much and made the wrong decision but does not want to screw his colleagues so stick it out for one year since already matched. THen, graduate internship and slide into psychiatry...?
can anyone corroborate this? Particularly in the Army programs.

Thanks!

More HPSP pitfalls

Wed, 03/17/2010 - 01:19
HPSP applicants: Medicare counts your prelim yr in the mil. in thir GME funding math (DME). If you decide not to train in the mil. after finishing your tour you could face trouble. E.g., if you did a TRI in the mil., became a GMO and then left the mil, you may not match to e.g. EM. Most programs are PGY 1-3/4, and the (repeated) PGY-1 would be funded at 50% level only. The program would have to provide ~ $15-25K from their funds to pay for your salary/benefits. This will not help your application! I was told this by a PD recently. When I was thinking about taking HPSP, I was told that the prelim yr in the navy would not count against me in my future residency training--either false (ignorance) or a lie. However, if applying to a PGY-2 program (e.g. anesth), you should have not problems: your mil. prelim satisfies their prelim requirement. Just thought you should know--a bad deal!

Anybody gone to Afghanistan recently?

I am a Navy internist and have orders for 8 months in Afghanistan. Anybody have input on what it is like these days?

COT info?

Was wondering if anyone knew anything about OBLC for the Army. I know it's 45 days in Texas, but that's about it. What exactly is covered, there?

NCC IM/FP & Psych Combined Residency

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 04:04
I'm curious if there are any residents currently in the National Capital Consortium's Combined IM/Psych or FM/Psych Residency, or any graduates of the same program(s). I am curious as to the possible career tracks one can take with dual board certification, especially in the Navy.

Clerkship question

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 03:42
Question about Navy clerkships: can I split up my 6 weeks of AT time for a fiscal year to do multiple ATs? My situation:

I want to do a family medicine clerkship with the Navy. Unfortunately I would need to do this begining in September, and it's a 6 week clerkship, so I'd overrun the fiscal year by 2 weeks. Can I use 30 days of my 2010 AT time, and combine it with 2 weeks of my 2011 AT time, while still allowing myself 30 days of time to do another clerkship late in 3rd year? Alternatively, can I do 6 weeks there, but 2 of them as a civilian?

Military (Navy) Combined Med-Peds

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 01:03
I am a first year osteopathic medical student on Navy HPSP. I am interested in (maybe) doing a combined med-peds residency down the road, but military GME does not offer such a combined program. Are there any military docs out there who are board-certified in both medicine and peds? I'm wondering if it's possible to "tailor" my Navy GME training by doing a transitional internship, then trying to do Med and Peds residencies back-to-back. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

Motorcycle regs

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 00:38
Can anyone help out an ignorant HPSPer? I'll be starting my intern year in June and I'm planning on riding my motorcycle to and from the hospital. Does the Army have a bunch of rules that I'm going to have to worry about? Do I have to do any extra training classes, etc? And I'm assuming it's okay to ride in uniform, assuming I don't have to wear my beret if I'm wearing a helmet, and I'm wondering if there's some kind of extra reflective stuff I have to wear like I saw people on bikes wearing.
Anyone know where I can find the official word on this stuff? Thanks!

EM Rotation at Wright-Patt (AF)

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 23:16
So in July I'm doing my "audition" rotation for the Air Force residency program at Wright-Patt, my number one choice. Then I'm taking the board exams, COMLEX and USMLE, in the middle of August.

Does anyone know how many hours per week you work on this rotation? Either way, I'll be using all my free time to study for Step II, but I'm just curious how much free time I'll have. It's not a laziness thing, I love EM and want to work, it's just unfortunate this could only be done the month before boards, but I'll start studying early so that isn't too much of a problem.

If anyone has done this rotation, I'd love to hear about it, just so I have an idea of what to expect. Thanks.

Jake

Civillian Doctors

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 21:58
Hi there:

I have ofen heard that the military will supplement with civillian Drs?

If this is true, what are the requirements, and is it worthwhile to look at this as a career?

Hpsp??

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 20:53
I havent seen any recent posts about the HPSP in a while. I was wondering if anyone knows the current situation with the scholarships.

I'm applying HPSP Navy and I'm just curious as to how competitive these are, and when you usually find out if you are accepted or not, and any news/advice in general.

Pendleton question

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 19:24
I am signed up to do an ER rotation at Camp Pendleton (not my first choice by any means, but there are several reasons I ended up doing it). I'm already prepared for it to be a pretty low-acuity rotation, but I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with the ED (or any other non-FM rotations) there. Thanks

OB/GYN in San Antonio - AF or Army people - question

Sat, 03/13/2010 - 14:04
Is there anyone at BAMC or Wilford in OB/GYN that would mind posting how your program is? Happy or malignant?

I'm curious if you feel happy with the training/program/call schedule...any other info you would mind sharing?

Just trying to get an idea of the program specs...Bamc and Wilford will merge by the time I am a resident, so either Army or AF comments would be amazingly helpful.

Thanks!

National guard active duty rotations

Fri, 03/12/2010 - 14:50
Ii am in the ARNG, and I am a first year student. I have already completed my OBLC at Ft. Sam. I need to be placed on some ADT orders this summer, and every summer. Does anyone know if I am able to do a military clerkship over the summer or rotate on ADT orders my 3rd and 4th year? How do I go about this?

How can a Navy HSCP or HPSP student do a Army residency?

Fri, 03/12/2010 - 01:23
I heard that there were Navy HPSP students who enrolled at William Beaumont Army Hospital to do their general surgery residency via FTOS. Does anyone know the process for doing this?

Would this be post a Navy GME1 or straight after medschool. I know that in the Army that straight through is the norm.

Just curious. Thanx

Military Residency Accreditation

Thu, 03/11/2010 - 05:17
Does anybody know if military medicine residencies are ACGME programs, AOA programs, or are they under another certification system? Also, do military residencies look at what you got Step 1 (I'm assuming yes) and do they look at COMLEX and USMLE or just one. Excuse the ignorance if this question is ridiculous, just looking for a little basic information.

How does a normal day play out? Is it the same routine?

HPSP for a Masters?

Wed, 03/10/2010 - 18:23
Hi,
I am interested to be a Health Services Administrator in the Medical Services Corps. But I’ve been told that requires a Master’s Degree… I only have a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration.

So I wanted to ask about the Health Professions Scholarship Program, and if I could use that to get a Masters… (I haven’t applied to any Graduate Program yet), and then be a commissioned officer and experience working for the military.
