VA Combined Rating Table Explained Step by Step

The VA combined rating table in 38 CFR 4.25 shows how VA combines two disability ratings into one. VA does not add ratings together. Each new rating applies only to the part of you that is still considered healthy, so the combined number is lower than the simple sum. This page shows how to read the table, how to use our lookup and what to do when you have three or more ratings.

This page is general information about the VA rating schedule in 38 CFR Part 4. It is not legal or medical advice. MilitaryMedicine is an independent service and is not affiliated with the VA or the Department of Defense.

How to read the combined ratings table

The table has rows and columns. Each cell gives the combined value of two ratings before VA rounds it.

  1. 1Find the row for your higher rating.
  2. 2Find the column for your next rating.
  3. 3The cell where they meet is the combined value before rounding.
  4. 4Round that value to the nearest 10 to get the rating VA pays. Values ending in 5 round up.

For example, the row for 50 and the column for 30 meet at 65. VA rounds 65 up to a 70 percent combined rating.

What to do with three or more ratings

The table only combines two ratings at a time. With more ratings, you work through them one by one.

Our va combined rating calculator does every step for you and shows the full table of steps. To learn the method behind the numbers, read our guide to VA math.

Calculate my rating
  1. 1Sort your ratings from highest to lowest.
  2. 2Combine the first two and keep the combined value from the cell. Do not round yet.
  3. 3Use that value as the new row and combine it with your next rating.
  4. 4Repeat until every rating is used, then round the last value to the nearest 10.

A note on the bilateral factor

If a condition affects both arms or both legs, VA uses the bilateral factor in 38 CFR 4.26. You combine the ratings for the paired limbs first, add 10 percent of that combined value, and then combine the result with your other ratings. The calculator applies this when you mark a condition as left and right. See a worked example in our VA math guide.

Want help with your claim

Accredited Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) help with claims at no cost. If you want an accredited attorney or claims agent, you can send one match request and choose whom to talk to.

Why is my combined rating lower than the sum of my ratings

VA uses the whole person method in 38 CFR 4.25. Each rating applies only to the efficiency that is left after the ratings before it, so the combined value is always lower than the simple sum.

Does VA round at every step

No. You keep the combined value from the table at each step and round only once at the end, to the nearest 10. Values ending in 5 round up.

Which rating goes in the row and which in the column

Put the higher rating in the row and the next rating in the column. When you have more ratings, the combined value from the last step becomes the new row.

Is the table the same as the calculator

Yes. The va combined rating calculator uses the same method as the table in 38 CFR 4.25 and also applies the bilateral factor from 38 CFR 4.26.

Is this the official VA table

No. MilitaryMedicine is an independent service. We follow the table published in 38 CFR 4.25, but only VA decides your rating.
