VA disability guides for veterans and their families

These VA disability guides explain how VA rates common conditions, what the exams look at and what happens after you file. Each guide cites the public regulation it describes in 38 CFR, uses plain words and links to the va combined rating calculator so you can see how a rating fits into your combined rating. The guides are general information, not medical or legal advice, and MilitaryMedicine is an independent service, not part of the VA or the Department of Defense.

See how your ratings combine

VA does not add ratings together. It combines them with the whole person method in 38 CFR 4.25. Our va math guide shows each step, and the calculator does the math for you.
